DESCRIPTION

The Chlemoutsi Castle Museum is housed in the interior courtyard of the homonymous archaeological site. It is an original cultural proposal on the museum map of Greece, as it constitutes an “open” thematic museum, with unique and interesting themes, addressed both to the visitor and to the specialized scientist. The permanent exhibition of the museum, titled “The Knights’ Season – The Crusaders at Morea”, has more than 500 objects, dating from the 13th to the 15th century AD. It focuses on the fascinating and critical historical period of the Frankish Principality of Achaia, while at the same time it presents the culture of a charming period in the broad public, that of the Knights Templar, as manifested in the southern land of Greece. According to the archaeologist, Athanasia Rallis, the aim of the museum is to promotethe rich archaeological reserve from the period of the Frankish rule, which is almost exclusively a product of excavation and comes from medieval places mainly of the Prefecture of Ilia and the wider lands of the Principality (Patras, Corinth). The construction of a museum space at Chlemoutsi Castle began in 1994 with the program of the 2nd CSF. of the ROP West. Greece by the Ministry of Culture, through the 6th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, and the first phase was completed in 2000 with the completion of the restoration, redevelopment and exploitation of the castle.
