The municipality of Pyrgos was established after the merging of the pre-existing municipalities of Pyrgos, Olena, Volax and Iardanos. It is the administrative and business capital lying 12 km from the port of Katakolo. Pyrgos is a modern city which is continually developing. It does though still maintain traditional neighborhoods and restored old buildings that lend to prove the historic significance of the town.
The main square is in the heart of the city. It is flankedon  one side by the Latseio Town Hall, on the other by the cathedral of St. Nikolas and finally by the hill of Eparheio that offers a view of the whole area to the sea. The cafes of the square are a favourite meeting place for the local population.
The Municipal market, one of the most outstanding restored buildings in the Peloponnese lies at a close distance to the main square as well as Apollo theatre where most cultural events take place in this vibrant city. The port of Katakolo lies 12 km from the city. It is the gate through which thousands of visitors enter the prefecture and it offers top quality services. The town of Epitalio is quite close to Pyrgos, there you can visit the archaeological site of ancient Epitalio as well as the monastery of Zoodohos Pigi , which is located on a hill. Two more destinations near the city of Pyrgos are the Monasteries of Skafidia and Kremasti, both have existed since Byzantine times. There are more churches and monasteries to visit in the surrounding area travelling through idyllic countryside.
Which ever route you decide to take from Pyrgos will definitely offer you an insight in Greece and an opportunity to savour the beauty of the area.
