DESCRIPTION

Also called The Castle of Thisoa, since it is located in the local community of Thisoa of the municipality of Andritsena – Krestena. It is a 13th century Frankish building whose remains are still preserved. According to historical references, the Castle of Thiesos or the Castle of Saint Helen was one of the castles built and owned by the Baron of Karytaina Hugo de Bruyere, built at the then “Scortes’ road” to control the area and the rebellious its inhabitants. Inside the Castle, there was the Latin church of Sainte Hellene, from which the castle was named.
Elements from the ancient acropolis are preserved as well. The small square acropolis, with a perimeter of 500 meters, is built with bulky local stones. Within the inner wall there are foundations of a small temple of thin, columns, capitals and fronts bearing all the distinctive decorations of Doric rhythm. It seems that this small sanctuary is modern of the temple of Apsylon of Basil (430-429 BC). At the highest point of the Acropolis there are the remnants of the Frankish Castle.
